Gloucestershire Cross Country County League Round 3.
Wotton Under Edge.
Sunday 9th December 2018.

The third round of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League took place at Wotton-under-Edge on the 9th December and was hosted by Dursley AC. Again the weather was good for the time of the year and although undulating in parts there were no major climbs but there were quite a few twists and turns that could catch runners out.

In the U11 boys competition Michael Astor again lead for most of the race but took a wrong turn and by the time he noticed, he rejoined the field towards the back of the field finishing in 42nd place. Such a shame as if he had won the race it would have guaranteed him 1st place overall. Lucas Hartley had one of his best starts to a race so far, leading over the first 100 metres keeping him well out of trouble, finally finishing in 6th place, best position so far. Ned Harrison ran a storming race finishing just behind Lucas in 9th place, a massive improvement on 22nd place in his last race. This was Harry Bradley’s first league race and although a little overawed ran extremely well for 11th place and with more experience is certainly going to move up. Alfie Sansom and William Chalmers have been taking part in the extra training sessions and seem to be benefitting. Alfie managed an excellent 19th place and William 35th, their previous best finishing positions were 34th and 50th, great improvement. The team finished the day in 3rd place and are currently 3rd overall with one race to go.

Grace Barrington Cramp and Bella Harrison were our sole runners in the U11 girls race. Grace ran well for 30th and Bella Harrison, who was probably the youngest in the race started at the very back and gradually moved up to 32nd place moving up 20 places through the race, very impressive and a massive talent for the future.

Kian Dee, 5th, Jonathan Cook 18th, Edward Jones 26th and Wilf Harrison 29th, all managed their best positions, so far in the league, in the U13 boys competition. Their previous best positions were 15th, 23rd, 44th and 43rd .  This has moved them up to 5th place overall from 9th place in the 1st round, extremely well done.

It is a shame that this was the first time we managed a full team in the U13 girls as all four girls put in strong performances. Ella Gray led the girls home in 15th place with Maite Capper Close behind in 16th. They were well supported by Abigail Barnett in 23rd and Isabel Dennett in 30th.

Kiya Dee and sister Taya are back to their best with a superb 1st and 3rd place. Kiya beat a Gloucestershire AC runner who beat her in the previous round and Taya moved up 5 places from the last round. Helena West again ran well for 13th place bringing the girls home in 3rd place on the day. They were also well supported by Isobel Barnett in 18th and Heidi Mundinano in 20th. The girls are currently in 2nd place overall and there is a slight chance of 1st if they run really well in the last round.

Tom Williamson was our sole runner in the U15 boys and did well for 14th especially as he has missed a great deal of training through the summer and will surely move further up if he trains regularly.

Jake Astor has always had the natural ability to be a great runner and over the last year has worked hard with his training and this season has a great chance of winning the U17 boys competition overall. He went off a little too fast on the day but still held on to 3rd place and more importantly beating his nearest contender who finished 5th on the day but was 1st in the previous round.
Emily Field again put in a strong performance for 3rd in the U17 girls competition and if she runs well in the last round should come away with 3rd overall. Gabby Jones again put in a strong performance for 3rd in the U20 girls competition and is also almost guaranteed 3rd place overall.

The final round takes place at Pitville Park, Cheltenham on Sunday 17th February 2019.

Gloucestershire Schools Cheltenham District Cross Country Trials.
St Edwards School. Cheltenham.
Friday 9th November 2018.

The Gloucestershire Schools Cheltenham District Cross Country Championships took place at St Edwards School at Charlton Kings, Cheltenham on Friday 9th November 2018. The venue is often used for School Cross Country events and is a demanding course with a steep hill section that has to be completed at least once, depending on the age group, very tough. The top twelve finishers in each age group then qualify for the Gloucestershire Schools Finals. Bourton Roadrunner Juniors had members competing for the Cotswold School and Chipping Campden School at the event.

In the Year 7 , Minor girls race Abigail Barnett came 4th and Ella Gray came  7th,  both qualifying for the finals.  In the boys race Jonathan Cook also qualified in 8th place with Edward Jones 28th, Dominic Luff 38th and Sean Farley 44th.

Maite Capper ran well in the Year 8/9 Junior girls race managing 15th with an outside change of being called up as a reserve. Isabel Dennett came 62nd with a strong run. Both girls are only year 8 so expect even higher positions next year.

It was always going to be a little difficult for Isobel Barnett and Heidi Mundinano in the Year 10/11 Inter Girls race. With Isobel turning her ankle during the race and Heidi suffering a bad cold they still managed to finish in 14th and 22nd respectively, they were also the youngest in their age groups and Isobel may also make the finals as a reserve. In the boys race Barney Hall did extremely well for 52nd place despite missing training throughout the  summer due to other commitments.

Gabby Jones also ran well in the Year 12/13 Senior Girls with an excellent 6th place also making the finals.

Kian, Kiya, and Taya Dee have also qualified for the Gloucestershire finals in the Cirencester  Schools District  Finals.

Gloucestershire Cross Country County League Round 2.
Charlton Park
Saturday 3rd November 2018.

The 2nd round of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League took part at Charlton Park, near Chippenham on the 3rd November 2018 and was kindly hosted by Chippenham Harriers.  The forecast at the beginning of the week did not sound to promising with the possibility of high winds and rain from the remnants of  Hurricane Oscar but fortunately the forecast changed and although a little breezy the weather was nice and dry. The undulating course takes in the picturesque grounds of Charlton Park and this year the conditions were much better than last year when it was extremely muddy in parts. The race was again well supported by Bourton Roadrunner Juniors with over 20 juniors taking part.

The under 11 boys was the first race, with Michael Astor taking his first win with a brilliant run, and more importantly, beating the runner who won the previous round. If this form continues he will have a great chance of winning the league. Lucas Hartley who is a year younger, ran his best race to date, with a very impressive 7th place, but also beating a number of runners who finished above him in the last round. This should give him great confidence for the next round. Arthur Quli was the next runner home bringing the first team home in 2nd place on the day. Arthur has missed a great deal of training due to other commitments so 24th place was very good and sure will get even better over the coming races. These runners were well supported by a group of younger runners including Alfie Sansom, 34th who moved up a few places from the last round, Toby Luff who missed the start of the race but still battled his way back for 51st, closely followed by William Chalmers in 52nd . If this form continues the team have a great chance of winning a County Medal at the end of the Competition.

With Bella Harrison away on holiday Grace Barrington Cramp was our sole runner in the U11 girls and again ran strongly for 25th overall. This is her first year in the Competition and if she continues to train regularly will certainly move up the field.

Kian Dee was our first runner home in the U13 boys in 15th place competition with a very solid run, finishing very strongly over the last quarter of the race. George Quli was close on his heals with another fine run for 20th, followed by Jonathan Cook in 30th who has improved greatly from last season through hard work and determination. Edward Jones enjoyed this course last year and again performed well for 44th moving up from  56th in the last round.  Dominic Luff was not far behind for 50th and Arlen Hartley 53rd also moved up a few places from the last round.

In the U13 girls competition Abigail Barnett moved up a few places from the last round for 21st and Isabel ran extremely well for 36th place. Both girls did extremely well especially as Abigail has struggled with a few injury niggles, which hopefully are now behind her, and Isabel has struggled a little in training but this was certainly not the case on the day.

Kiya and Taya Dee missed the last round due to the British Cross Challenge falling on the same day, so they were both a strong addition to the U15 girls team. Kiya started off strongly by leading the race but then suffered with her breathing but still bravely held on for 2nd overall. Taya also ran well for 8th despite suffering a little from stitch. Helena West, Heidi Mundinano and Isobel Barnett also did well for 18th, 19th and 20th. These results put the girls team into a very good 2nd place on the day and if they do well in the next two rounds, a great chance of an individual and team, County Medal.

Jake Astor continued as he left off in the 1st round with an excellent 3rd place in the U17 boys race and Robbie Hughes had another solid run 5th in the U20 boys. Both boys doing especially well as both have only just moved up to these age groups.

Emily Field was extremely happy with her 3rd place in the U17 girls, with one of her best performances to date and Gabby Jones ran well for 4th in the U20 girls despite again suffering stitch in the later stages of the race. As the U17’s and U20’s also run with the senior women these girls helped the senior team to 15th overall finishing 25th and 104th overall.

The next round of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League takes place at Wotton Parc, Wotton-under-Edge on Sunday 9th December 2018.

Other News for October.
Jake and Michael Astor took part in the Ascott under Wychwood Charity 5K Race on Sunday 28th October for the second year. Both boys ran extremely well over a scenic undulating multi-terrain course with Jake winning the race overall and despite his young age Michael managing 5th. Jake came 6th and Michael 8th both beating their previous time by almost two minutes.

Hundreds of children took part in the Junior Great South Run in Portsmouth on 20th October 2018. Kiya Dee managed to win the junior 2.5K race and sister Taya was close behind in 4th just missing out on 3rd by a very small margin. Brother Kian also did very well for 10th. Very impressive results.

Gloucestershire Cross Country County League Round 1.
Old Down Country Park
Saturday 13th October 2018.

The first round of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League took place on Saturday 13th October in the picturesque grounds of  Old Down Country Park overlooking the River Severn with a view of the  Severn Bridge in the distance. Bourton Roadrunner Juniors’s were well supported with twenty four members travelling to just of north of Bristol in stormy, windy conditions to support the club. The course was quite undulating with a long steady climb through a wooded area that was quite demanding and many narrower sections that made it difficult to pass the runners in front. Fortunately during the junior race’s, the sun came out, it was warm and more importantly, there was no rain, although it was still very windy.

The U11 girls was the first race and also the first time that Grace Barrington-Cramp and Bella Harrison had run in the league. Both girls ran really well with Grace who is still only nine years old managing 14th and Bella who is only seven managing 24th out of 46 runners. For the first part of the race Bella was 2nd from the back but was so strong over the remainder of the race that she overtook over 20 runners, very impressive for her age.

Michael Astor and Lucas Hartley who are in year 5 and 4 have had an impressive year and this continued in the U11 boy’s race. Michael made a good start and was jostling for 1st place throughout the race and just missed out at the end for 2nd place. Pretty sure that a 1st place is not too far away. Lucas did not have the greatest start but gradually made his way though the field for a very good 12th place and in future races with more experience is certainly going to move up. Ned Harrison ran very strongly for 22nd place, leading the 1st team home in 3rd place only 6 points behind 2nd.  Arthur Quli ran strongly for 30th and Alfie Sansom, Toby Luff and William Chalmers who are all only 8 years old and some of the youngest runners in the race all did very well with Alfie coming 37th, Toby 43rd and William 50th, bringing the 2nd team home in 9th place.

As with the U11 girls, Bourton also only had two runners in the U13 girls, and therefore one runner short to make a team which was a shame. As with the U11’girls both girls ran really well with Maite Capper 15th and Abigail Barnett 23rd out of a total of 47 runners who took part.

This was the first season for Jonathon Cook, Wilf Harrison, Dominic Luff, Edward Jones and Arlen Hartley in the U13 boys and the second season for George Quli. All the boy’s did very well with Jonathan having a particularly good start and race throughout, managing an excellent 23rd place. George showed his experience pacing himself well and overtaking Jonathan in the later stages for 20th. Wilf 43rd was the third runner home bringing the 1st team home in 9th with Dominic 54th, Edward Jones 56th and Arlen Hartley bringing the 2nd team home in 14th. If these runners continue to train regularly they will certainly move up.

Heidi Mundinano has been working extremely hard with her training leading to her best finish yet in an excellent 11th place in the U15 girls. Helena West and Isobel Barnett both ran strongly for 14th and 17th bringing the girls team home in 4th place.  Emily Field and Gabby Jones both ran well in the Ladies Race incorporating the U17’s, U20’s and Senior Ladies. Emily managed 36th overall and 8th in the U17’s despite stopping to help an injured runner and Gabby was 96th overall and more surprisingly 1st U20 lady.

Tom Williamson has missed a great deal of summer training but still had a good run for 21st in the U15 boys and will certainly move up if he trains regularly. Over the last year Jake Astor has taken his training far more seriously and with his natural ability he is starting to reap the rewards. Despite only just moving up to the U17 age group he managed 2nd place only 6 seconds behind 1st. As with his brother in the U11’s, a 1st place is not far away if he continues to train regularly. Robbie Hughes always puts everything into his races and despite suffering cramp in his calf still managed 16th place in the U20 boys despite just moving up from the U17’s, last season.

The 2nd Round of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League takes place at Charlton Park on Saturday 3rd November.

Chedworth 2.5Km Fun Run and 5Km Trail Run.
Sunday 16th September 2018.

The Chedworth 2.5Km Fun Run and 5Km Trail Run took part on Sunday 16th September in aid of St Andrews Primary School. As in previous years this was part of the Bourton Roadrunners Junior Race Champ Series and again was well supported by its junior runners. Both courses are undulating and quite demanding, mostly Cross Country and a good warm up for the up coming Cross Country Season.

In the Fun Run there were plenty of prizes with trophies for first U5, U7, U9, U11 and U13, girl and boy, with all runners receiving a finishing medal. Kian Dee ran superbly, winning the race and winning the U13 boy’s trophy. He was almost a minute quicker than the previous year where he was 5th, big improvement. Lucas Hartley who was only 9 a few weeks is one to watch for the future, was only 30 seconds behind for 2nd overall and first U11. Ned Harrison despite missing a great deal of training through the summer with an injury put in a strong run to finish 3rd overall. Arthur Quli also ran well to finish 4th, two places up from last year and 25 seconds quicker than last year.

Isabel Dennett was the next Bourton runner home in a very good 7th place and 1st lady home, winning the U13 girl’s trophy. She moved up from 18th last year beating her time by over a minute, very impressive.  Edward Jones and Alfie Sansom both did well, for 9th and 11th. Edward moved up from 16th the previous year, 15 seconds quicker and this was Alfie’s first race for the club.
Bella Harrison who is only 7 always put in a very strong run for 13th overall,  first under 9 lady and was third lady overall. William Chalmers 17th and Eleanor Jones 34th also made big gains on last year, with William moving up from 30th place, and Eleanor 51st, both almost two minutes quicker.

In the 5Km Trail Run there were prizes for the first three, Female and Male runners to finish. Jake Astor who had won his previous last three races had to this time settle for 3rd place overall, behind two much older adult runners, one of which had previously competed in the Commonwealth Games. More impressive was that he was over two minutes quicker than the previous year. Kiya Dee has had a very impressive year, the highlight of which was running for England Schools in an international Cross Country Competition earlier in the year. Not surprising then that she was 4th overall and picked up the 1st female prize even though she is still only thirteen years old.

Jake’s brother Michael at 9 years old  is another young runner with massive potential for the future with an excellent 5th place. Emily Field was close behind in 8th picking up the 3rd place Ladies prize. George Quli also did well despite playing a Football match just before, for 9th place, taking over a minute off his time the previous year. Taya Dee did extremely well to finish in 12th place after suffering a bad Asthma attack during the race and Jonathan Cook put in another good performance for 17th and 3rd U13.

Maite Capper 18th, has missed a great deal of summer training, but looks very good for the coming Cross Country Season taking over 4 minutes off her time last year. Isabel Barnett, Heidi Mundinano and Abigail Barnett have worked extremely hard through the summer and ran well for 21st, 22nd and 23rd respectively. Arlen Hartley also ran strongly for 28th.

Bourton One Mile Challenge.
Saturday 21st July 2018.

On the 21st July 2018 the annual 1 mile race took part in Bourton on the Water, this also incorporated the Gloucestershire championships.

Held in very warm but perfect conditions the championship got underway at 630pm, followed by the fun run a few minutes after. This has now become a very popular race with approx. 180 athletes taking part. The juniors love running in this race as they all run with the adults, this very rarely happens and they beat most of them as well.

There were some outstanding performances.

Kiya Dee showed today why see was selected for England by winning the 15 girl’s race and becoming county champion in a very fast and impressive 5mins 30secs. He sister Taya pushed her very hard today as well as she improves race by race to collect the silver county medal in 5mins 47secs. To take the clean sweep for the team Helena West ran very strongly tonight to win the bronze medal in 6mins 8sesc. Isobel Dennett is racing so well at the moment in yet another fine strong run to finish 6th in 6mins 32secs, she was well backed up by Isobel Barnett in 7th in 6mins 41secs racing against girls much older than her as was Annabella Williams in 8th in 6mins 59secs, all these girls also finished well up the adults field, very impressive indeed.

In the boys under 15 county race Kian Dee deservedly won the bronze medal in a very competitive race in a fine 6mins 3secs and finishing well up the men’s field .Jonathon Cook is starting to race well  to finish a strong 6th  6mins 29secs in 5th. He had a good race with Will Kenyon he battled well in 6th with 6mins 35secs. Again these boys were racing with boys much older than them so a good prospects in the years to come

In the fun run just after the county field Abigail Barnett had a good race win today in a strong field, she led well to win in 6mins 34secs. Ella Grey is getting stronger every race after a good summers training and it paid dividends today with a very good 2nd in 6mins 37secs, a very close finish for the top spot. It was good to see Ella Lane Gregory racing again as she finished well in 7 mins40secs. There were also good runs today by Ellen Montilla in 9mins 23 secs and the ever improving Eleanor Jones in 10mins 15sesc.

In the boys race Wilf Harrison had a fantastic run to finish 4th in fine 6mins31 secs, plenty more to come here as well. Edward Jones pushed him hard all the way to finish 5th in 6mins 33secs, he is becoming a very consistent racer now. There was also another good battle not far behind as these three really pushed each other well, Alfie Samson in 7mins 6secs, William Chalmers in 7mins 13 secs and Freddie Samson in 7mins 28secs. Daniel Brett in his first race for the club had a fine run in 9mins 23 secs and with some good training he will go far in the future.

Sherborne 3K Fun Run.
Sunday 25th June 2018.

The 2018 Sherborne Fun Run took place again this year on 25th June, and once again Bourton Juniors turned out in force to support the event, held from and in aid of the local school. The course is far from easy the first half of the race is up a steep climb into the woods with lots of twist and turns. The conditions were perfect. There was also a very big field so some tough completion for Bourton. However Bourton put in some fine performances on all levels.

Jake Astor made it 3 wins out of 3  in the Under 15 boys race with a fine front run, totally in control  of the race, he was the overall winner in the race as well in a time of 9mins 39secs. George Quli is gaining strength and confidence with every race with a fine 2nd today in 10mins 3secs. Arthur Fletcher consistent as ever pushed hard well in 3rd in 10mins 20secs, a great result all our boys on the podium. They were very well backed up by Dorgal Hamilton Smith who had a fine 6th today in 11mins 2 secs.

It was the same picture in the under 11 boys race with Bourton taking all the top spots, A first race win for Wilf Harrison in 10mins 21secs, very impressive. He was pushed hard by Peter Fletcher in 3rd in 10mins 23secs who in turn had a good battle with Sean Farley in 3rd in 10mins 25ecs. Jonathon Cook battled round well after a nasty injury to take 6th in 11mins 11 secs. Edward Jones is coming back into form with a solid run in 9th in 11mins 22secs. Arlen Hartley also ran well today in this very competitive field to take 11th in 12mins 34secs

In the under 10 boys race Bourton dominated again with Ned Harrison winning in style in 10mins 27secs
Run of the day had to be Michael Astor in the boys under 9 race he not only won this category but was also 2nd overall in the race ahead of boys much old than him with only his brother ahead of him in 9mins 56sesc, what potential we have here. Thomas Cassidy had a good race to finish on the podium in 3rd position in 11mins 9secs., he was pushed hard by Sam Regan in a good 4th in 11mins 13secs who also had a great battle with the ever improving Arthur Quli as he was given the same time but was given 5th as he was out dipped on the line.

The under 8 boys also had a great day with Lucas Hartley picking up a very good win in a prestigious race in10mins 22secs and also finished well up the overall field.  William Chalmers also finished on the podium today in an excellent 3rd in 12mins 21secs.
A fine days racing for the boys

In the girls race under 15 race Helena West ran tactically brilliant race, at the half way point she was tucked in well behind the leader letting her pull her up the long hill, but as the stared to head for home she changed gear and pulled clear and she kept a good gap open to win in 10 mins 28secs. Lauren Farley also had a fine strong run today to take 2nd spot in 10mins 54secs. All the hard training this summer is now paying off for Heidi Mundinano as she finished 3rd today in 11mins 32secs to finish the clean sweep for the girls. They were all well backed up by a fine run by Maisy Regan in 4th in 12mins 14secs. It was also good to see Eleanor Gilbert racing again in 7th in 13mins 43secs.

In the under 11 girls race we carried on with the winning theme with a very fine run from Ella Gray who seems to float over the ground with very little effort to win well in 11mins 42secs. As did Grace Barrington – Camp with her  first race win in the girls under 9 race, if she carries on training well she will have many more.

A good days work for Bourton Juniors well done to everyone.

Taya Dee was not far behind with another strong run for 4th place and 2nd placed 13+ trophy as was Michael Astor with a superb 5th place and 1st U13 male trophy closely followed by George Quli 7th overall and 3rd U13 male trophy.

Lucas Hartley has improved greatly over the past six months and finished a well deserved 8th, especially at 8 years old. Kian Dee again suffered a little with the heat but did well for 12th. Kian was closely followed by Ned Harrison in 13th, another young runner with great potential star.

Isobel Barnett won the 3rd placed Female 13+ trophy. Wilf Harrison would certainly have finished further up the field if he had not run into a wall injuring himself and Jonathan did very well and enjoyed his first race back after a long period off due to illness.

Our final runner home was 7 year old Bella Harrison in her first Fun Run in an excellent 59th place.

Northleach Fun Run.
Sunday 20th May 2018.

The Northleach Fun Run was well supported by  Bourton Roadrunner Junior’s with sixteen runners finishing in the top twenty. The weather was sunny and warm and with a demanding steep section on the course made the going quite difficult for some.

Jake Astor has been in superb form this year and after coming 2nd last year, won the race this year taking over a minute off his time. Kiya Dee was also in great form finishing close behind in 2nd and 1st lady. Not surprising though after running for England in Cross Country this year. Michael Astor keeps impressing with an excellent 3rd place and at only 9 years old a star in the making.

Taya Dee also impressed with 4th place and 2nd lady behind her sister. Another young star in the making is Lucas Hartley, 6th place overall taking over 4 minutes off his time last year and at only 8 years old. Kian Dee did extremely well after suffering from the heat, never giving up for 7th .

Sean Farley and Dougal Hamilton-Smith both ran well for 8th place and 11th overall. Sam Regan who has just recently joined the club did extremely well for 12th and at 9 years another young runner to watch for the future.

Also in the top twenty with impressive runs were Edward Jones 13th ,14:41 this year , 15:17 last year. Wilf Harrison 15th, Thomas Cassidy 16th, over a minute quicker than last year. William Chalmers managed 23rd, a massive improvement from last years 52nd place and over 2 minutes quicker.

Maisy Regan, Grace Barrington-Cramp and Heidi Mundinano have only just recently joined the club and have certainly impressed since joining with 28th, 29th and 30th  on the day. Our final runner home was Eleanor Jones who always runs with a big smile on her face. Only 6 years old, 89th out of over 100 hundred runners and over a minute quicker than last year.

Sunday 25th March 2018.

Bourton Roadrunner Juniors included the Pendock Spring Chicken Run near Tewkesbury in its Race Competition Series for the 2nd year. Runners can choose to run a 1K or 5K race to gain points in the competition. This year we advised runners unless very young, to run the 5k after feed back from last year. The course is about a third on farm tracks and footpath and the rest on quiet country roads that are well marshalled. There is a relatively steep climb just over a kilometre into the race with fantastic views at the top of the Malvern Hills.

Emily Field was our first runner home in an excellent 6th place overall and  1st lady. Emily has massive potential but often does not perform her best with a hilly course but certainly did this time with one of her best runs to date.

Robbie Wood was our 2nd runner home with a strong run for 9th overall and 3rd senior male. Robbie is still relatively new to racing and will get even better with more experience after being held up a little at the start of the race.

After running the day before at Loughborough, George Quli again ran extremely well for 11th overall and 3rd junior male.
Lucas Hartley also ran the day before at Loughborough and is another runner with massive potential that showed no tiredness from the day before. Despite still being only just 9 and year 3 at school he managed an excellent 17th place.

Edward Jones ran the 5k last year and enjoyed it so much that he wanted to run it again this year. He finished in a very good 28th place over a minute quicker than last year. He was closely followed by Arthur Quli 29th and Thomas Cassidy 32nd with both running well and over quarter of the way up the field especially as both are only just 9 years of age.

Isobel Barnett and Abigail Barnett both did well for 35th and 42nd respectively even though Abigail was still tired from the Nationals the day before.

Despite being worried about running 5k for the first time Arlen Hartley and Ella Gray ran well for 45th and 47th, still over a third the way up the field. Especially as Arlen suffered cramp during the warm up and Ella ran most the race with stitch.

Eleanor Jones was our sole runner in the 1k race but thoroughly enjoyed it as she did last year.

Thank you to Nigel Tillot and his team for putting on such a well run event and we will certainly be back again next year.

SIAB Schools International.
Woolaton Park, Nottingham.
Saturday 24th March 2018.

After finishing 6th with a superb run at Leeds in the ESAA Schools Cross Country Nationals, Kiya Dee from Bourton Roadrunners was chosen to run for the England School’s team in the SIAB Schools International at Woolaton Park, Nottingham on the 24th March taking on teams from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Kiya ran with composure and maturity for such a young age. During the early stages of the race she was around 15 to 20 places off the leaders but as the race progressed she gradually drew them in, to finish an excellent 7th place and 4th England runner home helping England to first place and Gold Medals for the team.  Certainly a name to watch out for in the future.

Primary Schools Cross Country Nationals.
Prestwold Hall. Loughborough.
Saturday 24th March 2018.

Bourton Roadrunner Junior’s took a small team to the Primary School’s Cross Country Nationals on Saturday 24th March at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough.  The team consisted of Junior’s who missed out on running for the county for one reason or another and wanted to gain experience for possibly making the county team in the future. Our runners did not disappoint with all doing very well.

The county made a decision to only take Year 5’s for the year 5 race, but after finding out that the club could enter Year 4’s or even Year 3’s in the Year 5 race, as long as they were of a very good standard. With both Michael Astor and Lucas Hartley falling into this category they were both keen to take part. Michael finished 2nd in the District Final’s and did extremely well on the day finishing towards the top of the field in 44th place. If he had been in the Gloucestershire team he would have been 2nd Gloucestershire runner home. A certain miss to the Gloucestershire team. Lucas gained a great deal of experience on the day but did get caught out at the start at a bottleneck at the first turn. He then gradually made his way through the field to finish an excellent 161st place moving up at least eighty places. Our final runner in the Year 5 race was Ned Harrison who only joined the club a few months ago and finished a very good 201st place out of 266 runners. Another runner with massive potential for the future.

Abigail Barnett was our sole runner in the Year 6 girls and just missed out on selection for the Gloucestershire team finishing 13th after leading the race in the early stages. In the National’s she paced herself far better, moving up the field throughout the race finishing a 119th out of 252 runners. Great to see a massive smile on her face after the race.

Kian Dee just missed out by one place finishing 11th in the Gloucestershire finals and did well on the day with a strong run finishing 131st in the Year 6 boys race. He would have been 9th Gloucestershire runner on the day if he had been in the team. He was joined by Wilf Harrison and Peter Fletcher who also ran well finishing 192nd and 221st respectively with 262 runners taking part. It was great to see the team spirit at the end with each member waiting and congratulating each other at the finish before moving on with a little wave at the camera as the event was recorded and streamed live.

George Quli and Arthur Fletcher were our last runners in the Year 7 race with both members running  well. George also got a little caught at the back at the start of the race but moved up the field finishing 142nd out of 168 runners. As Arthur has missed a little training recently he did well finishing 163rd in such a high class field.

All the runners thoroughly enjoyed the with all wanting to return next year.

A massive thank you to John Skevington and his team for putting on such a superb event.

New Balance English Schools Cross Country Championships.
Temple Newsam Park, Leeds.
Saturday 17th March 2018.

Bourton Roadrunner Juniors had three members who qualified to run in the New Balance English Schools Cross Country Nationals at Leeds on the 17th March. With the Beast from the East 2 forecasted it was going to be extremely cold for the runners with possible snow and ice. Fortunately there was no snow but with strong winds, freezing cold conditions for all the Athletes.

In the Junior girls, sisters Kiya and Taya Dee continued as in the Inter Counties the week before with superb runs. Kiya managed 6th winning an England shirt and Taya 36th helping the Gloucestershire Juniors Girls team to an excellent 6th place overall.

Emily Field ran in the Inter Girls Competition and although suffered a little from the cold still managed a very good 155th place improving greatly from 216th the previous year.

Gloucestershire Primary Schoools Cross Country Championships.
St Edwards School. Charlton Kings. Cheltenham.
Saturday 10th March 2018.

The Gloucestershire Primary Schools took place on the same day as the Inter Counties at St Edwards School, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham with its tough hill. Abigail Barnett did extremely well finishing 11th, improving from last years 24th place and Kian Dee finished in an excellent 13th place in the Year 6 boys race. Both have a chance of running for Gloucestershire in the Nationals as reserves but if not will join a Bourton Roadrunner’s team who will also send a small team to the Nationals to gain experience at Loughborough. Wilf Harrison was upset not to be able to run due to illness.

Only Year 5 and 6's were able to run this year's Gloucestershire Finals, they may change and allow years 3's and 4's to compete as year 5's if they qualify through the District Champs. Unfortunately for Michael Astor (Year 4) who finished 2nd in the District as well as Arthur Quli (Year 4) and Lucas Hartley (Year 3) who would have also qualified if they were older, were not allowed to run. After speaking to one if the organisers of the Primary Schools Nationals these runner's can compete as year 5's in a BRR Junior team, so luckily will not miss out this year.

We did have a number of runner's who did well at the North Cotswolds District Championships at Moreton-in-Marsh, many improving on their position from last year. Unfortunately due to a number of schools not giving in their finishing positions we do not have a results sheet to give positions this year.

Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.
Prestwold Hall. Loughborough.
Saturday 10th March 2018.

Bourton Roadrunner Juniors had six members representing Gloucestershire in the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough. After the snow the previous week and a great deal of rain since, there were flood warnings out for the area. The undulating course was virtually all mud that just got worse after every race making it very difficult going for the runners.

In the U13 girls the club had one of its highest finishers in recent times when Kiya Dee finished 4th overall despite being tripped and falling halfway through the race. She was only 15 seconds behind the winner and 10 seconds behind 3rd so could have made top three if she had not fallen. Sister Taya is also starting to the show the form she showed last year with an equally impressive run for an excellent 29th out of over  300 of the UK’s best runners.

Emily Field and Gabby Jones competed in the Inter Counties for the first time and both girls did well. Emily went of a little to quick but held on well to finish 1st Gloucestershire runner back in the U17 girls competition in a very good 142nd place. Gabby was called up as a reserve only a few weeks before and despite suffering stitch finished in a well deserved 272nd place.

In the U15 boy’s competition Jake Astor and Harvey Sawyer were also competing for the first time in the Inter Counties. Unfortunately both boys placed their timing chips on their wrists instead of their ankles and their positions were not registered. Luckily due to several photos being taken we were able to calculate their approximate positions. Jake ran strongly finishing first Gloucestershire runner home in around 175th position give or take a few places. Harvey was called up last minute also as a reserve and although racing at this level was always going to be difficult acquitted himself well finishing in around 300th place.

Well done to all our runners and hope they can make the Championships again next year.

Gloucestershire Cross Country County League Round 4.
Pitville Park. Cheltenham.
Saturday 17th February 2018.

The 4th round of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League took place at Pitville Park, Cheltenham on Saturday 17th February and the event was well supported by Bourton Roadrunner Juniors.

In the U11 boys competition Kian Dee was our first runner home and despite having a bad cold still ran strongly and finished in a very creditable 27th place. Arthur Quli was not far behind in 36th  place running an even paced race and despite going off a little too quick, Edward Jones held on for a very respectable 42nd place.  These runners were well supported by Atticus Sinton 50th, Thomas Cassidy 51st, Dominic Luff 57th and Jacob Sinton 63rd.

Ella Gray showed her class in the U11 girls with an excellent 8th place overall despite this being her first outing this season. Abigail Barnett also did well for 15th despite suffering a little with a niggly knee.

George Quli was our sole runner in the U13 boys and did well for 26th after missing a great deal of training over the last month with the dreaded flue like cold that has hit so many of our members.

Kiya Dee again destroyed the field with her third 1st place finish in the U13 girl’s race which gives her an unassailable lead in the Competition this year. Sister Kaya Dee  ran strongly for 10th and Isabel Dennett was our last runner home in 32nd place bringing the team home in 3rd place overall.

In the U15 boys Harvey Sawyer and Tom Williamson both did well for 12th and 15th respectively.

Helena West showed her experience in the U15 girls gradually moving up the field through the race for a well deserved 11th place. Isobel Barnett after a few difficult years is again on the up and getting better and more confident with every race for 16th. Heidi Mundinano who has just recently joined the club ran steadily for 20th and will undoubtedly move up the field the more she trains.

Robbie Hughes did well in the U17/20 boys race for 11th as the standard in the race was extremely high.

The U17 girls again ran in the ladies race and despite Emily Field suffering badly from stitch in the middle section of the race, again showed her class with an excellent 26th overall and 2nd place in the U17 girls competition. Gabby Jones suffered with her achilles and did well to finish in 88th overall and 7th U17 girl.

South West Schools Cross Country Championships.
Saturday 3rd February 2018.

Bourton Roadrunner Juniors had three members chosen to represent Gloucestershire Schools in the South West Schools Cross Country Championships in Devon on Saturday 3rd February. The event took place at Stover School, near Newton Abbot on the edge of Dartmoor. The course comprised of a flatter section that was quite difficult, as it was very muddy and quite narrow in parts, an undulating wooded section and the older runners also had to contend with an additional field, with a relatively tough hill.

In the Junior Girls race Kiya Dee and a Dorset runner opened a gap on the rest of the field and although Kiya ran extremely well, the Dorset runner just came out on top at the very end. Sister Taya had a strong run for 41st helping Gloucestershire to a well deserved 2nd place overall.

Emily Field ran in the Inter Girls race and had one of her best races to date with a very good 24th place helping the Gloucestershire team to another excellent 2nd place.

All three girls have a great chance in being chosen to represent Gloucestershire Schools in the Schools Nationals in March.

Other News for January 2018.

Kiya Dee broke 20 minutes in the Cheltenham Park Run on Saturday 20th January and also broke the record for the quickest U15.

Gloucestershire Cross Country County Championships.
Old Down Country Park. Near Bristol.
Saturday 6th January 2018.

The Gloucestershire County Championship’s took place at Old Down Country Park, near Bristol, for the 2nd year in a row.  The undulating course is set in the beautiful surrounding of this estate with several steep sections that many athletes found quite demanding.

Although numbers were down on the previous year, with several members missing the race through illness, Bourton Roadrunner Junior’s still did very well.

Abigail Barnett was our sole runner in the U11 girls and ran a well, paced race for 16th place.  Michael Astor keeps getting better and better with another superb run for 6th place in the U11 boy’s and with several more years in this age group could be a potential winner in the future. Kian Dee never disappoints with another strong run for 11th and was well supported by Edward Jones in 29th , bringing the U11 boy’s team home in 3rd place and a well deserved Bronze Medal.

Despite still suffering the after effects of a cold, Kaya Dee destroyed the field behind her in the U13 girl’s showing her class with her sister Taya finishing strongly with another, very impressive run in 2nd. They were supported by Isabel Dennett who is getting better with each race in 24th place securing 3rd team place overall and Olivia McMorris ran bravely, finishing the race despite feeling very unwell in 26th place.

Helena West showed all her experience with a strong showing in the U15 girl’s for 12th place and Isobel Barnett was running well until a recurring injury forced her to retire from the race.

Jake Astor has improved massively from last year and ran his best race to date with an excellent 7th place with Harvey Sawyer also improving on the previous year in 13th place in the U15 boys.

Emily Field and Gabby Jones both ran well in the U17 girls managing 6th and 8th place respectively. Robbie Hughes also did well for his first County Champ’s running strongly for 11th place in the U17 boys.

Kiya, Taya, Emily, Jake and Harvey have been chosen to represent Gloucestershire in the Inter counties Championships and Helena and Gabby are currently reserves.
