Bourton Hilly Half + 10K – 16th June 2019

New for 2019, Bourton Roadrunners revamped its old half marathon route, but still included the classic ‘Steeps’ climb out of Bourton towards Clapton on the Hill. There also the addition of a hilly 10k, which followed the same route for one lap, with both races finishing at Bourton Vale Cricket Club.

Whilst there was heavy rain at the start of the race, the runners were rewarded with sunshine part way through. Neither the conditions nor the hilly terrain appeared to put the runners off, with some exiting performances in both races, which started together.

The race winner of the Hilly Half was David Bell of Cirencester AC, in a superb time of 1:14:34. Shona Crombie-Hicks of Tewkesbury RC was the half marathon’s winning lady in a time of 1:30:13.

Callum Roberts, an unattached runner, won the Hilly 10K (36:47) and Donna Allen of Hook Norton Harriers was the first lady in the 10K (43:25). Donna was 7th overall in the 10K.

Most of Bourton Roadrunners’ members were engaged in organising and support duties; however, a few were brave enough to take-on the race. David Turnbull maintaining his push in the County MV65 category completed the half marathon in 1:56:38, despite have celebrated his 70th birthday during the week. Next to finish was Gillian Carrick (2:07:00) followed by race sweeper-runner Liz Hulcup (2:37:46).

In the Hilly 10k race Bourton was represented by Jake Astor, 1st MU20, in a superb time of 45:38 and 10th overall in the race. Next to finish was Jake’s father Henry (48:36), 2nd MV50. Alan Gibson completed the Bourton trio (49:51), who won the men's team prize.

Cirencester Park 10k Summer Sizzler – 12th June 2019

Seven Bourton Roadrunners braved the rain at Cirencester park, the 5th event of this year’s Gloucestershire Road Race Series. First Bourton runner home was Darren Long 1st MV45 and 8th overall in the race, in a time of 37:25.

Next back was Diana Dee 2nd LV50 in a time of 45:58. Susan Hunt another good run (48:36), managing to see-off club mate John Gibson (48:50) for the second time this year. David Turnbull was consistent as every achieving 50:30 and 5th MV65. Liz Hulcup and Gillian Carrick had their usual battle, with Liz winning-out this time finishing 3rd LV65 in 51:24 and Gillian 2nd LV60 in 53:49.

Kingham 10k – 22nd June 2019

Saturday brought very warm weather for the challenging Kingham 10k, which was the 7th event in the club’s own competition series. And with it another top-ten finish for Martin Cook, having entered only after his son’s cycle event had been cancelled that morning. Being a last-minute decision to run on his way back from the cycle event, he ran in cargo-shorts but still achieved a creditable 42:15 and tenth overall.

Next to finish was Niamh Shoemark in 43:50 – 1st LV50 and 2nd lady. Margaret Hollamby gave another fine performance in very warm conditions, finishing 1st LV60 (49:20). Other Bourton finishers, all having raced at least once in the last few days, were John Gibson (50:15), Susan Hunt 2nd LV50 (50:36), John Harding (56:02), Graham Lane (56:55), Alan Gibson (61:35) and Chris Dry (63:33).

Highlights

The new Bourton Hilly Half + Hill 10K a success, despite heavy rain at the start, with a brilliant performance from Cirencester’s Dave Bell, the clear winner of the Hilly Half in 1:14:34.

Seven Bourton Roadrunners braved the rain at the Cirencester Park Summer Sizzler 10k (some called it the Summer Drizzle). It didn’t put off Darren Long, he was still 1st MV45 and 8th overall.

Nine club members enjoyed the sunshine (and the hills) at the Kingham 10k, with Martin Cook finishing 10th.
