Hooky 6 miles - 7th August, 2022

On a very warm and sunny morning eight Bourton Roadrunners took-on the ever-popular Hook Norton Harriers’ Hooky 6 mile race, comprising a two lap ‘undulating’ course around the very pretty local countryside.

This event was part of the club’s 6-from-10 race series. First to finish for Bourton was the in-form Tim Swalling, who managed his pace perfectly for the conditions and looked happy and relaxed whenever spotted around the course, finishing in 41:26. Next for the club was veteran runner Andy Peaston; no stranger to the Hook Norton course, finishing in a respectable 45:56. The club’s first lady to finish was Lorna Shawcross, who had a fine run and was 3rd LV55 in 48:08. Other Bourton members were Ian Tolfts (50:18), John Harding (50:50), Rob Williams (52:20), Gill Carrick (54:33) and Louise Hamilton-Smith (65:15). Louise, who is in training for her first marathon, at York, also ran the ten miles home afterwards for her Sunday long run.

St. Neots Standard Duathlon - 6th August 2022

Bourton’s veteran athlete Darren Long continues to experiment with mixed discipline events and this week participated in the St. Neots Standard Duathlon. This event comprised a 10k run over a 2½k course, a bike ride of 38k covering an out and back course, finishing with a 5k run over the same course as the 10k. Darren completed the race in a time of 2:20:03, with the 10k run covered in a very respectable 39:57; the bike stage in 1:18:38 and 5k run in a sharp 19:56.

Lock-to-Lock 10k swim, Oxfordshire - 7th August 2022

Meanwhile, Maxine Emes continues to make a name for herself on the open water race circuit. This time Maxine took-on the Lock-to-Lock 10k swim, from Farmoor to Godstow Lock, Oxfordshire. Three locks were involved; Pink Hill, Eynsham and Kings Lock. The swimmers had to exit the river and re-enter at marked points.

Entrants could take part as wetsuit or non-wetsuit participants; Maxine elected the non-wetsuit category, finishing 3rd in that class, and 12th overall among the 54 entrants, in a brilliant time of 2:53:35.

Barry Island 10k - 7th August 2022

Bourton’s 2nd claim member Jaq Underwood took part in the Barry Island 10k, finishing in 46:14 and 3rd LV55 (39/371 finishers).

Newport Riverfront: Jaq Underwood (2nd claim) – 25:14.
Somerdale Pavilion: Susan Hunt (2nd claim) – 25:14 (1st LV55), Linda Edwards (2nd claim) – 30:10.
Witney: Louise Hamilton-Smith - 41:10.

Highlights

Tim Swalling made the challenging Hooky 6 look relatively tame, running sub-7 minutes per mile in hot conditions.

Darren Long is still maintaing sub-40 for 10k and sub-20 for 5k at the St. Neots Standard Duathlon.

Maxine Emes continues to perform well in the open-water swim world, finishing finishing 3rd in her class at the Lock-to-Lock 10k swim.
