Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire -

Haresfield 5K - 21st August 2024

Last Wednesday evening provided ideal weather conditions for the Haresfield 5Km road race, both for the runners and spectators. This annual event organised by Gloucester AC, was part of the Gloucestershire AAA Road Race Series and incorporated the Gloucestershire County 5Km Championship.

In a highly competitive field, whilst outside of the prizes, Bourton Roadrunners’ Alex Pye ran a well-judged race, using second-place woman Steph Lane from Cheltenham & County Harriers as his marker throughout. Alex finished in 17th position overall in a new personal best (PB) time of 18 minutes and 1 second.

Close on Alex’s heals was Darren Long in 19 minutes and 21 seconds, claiming 3rd position in the MV50 category. In-form Maxine Emes was rewarded with 2nd place in the WV40 category in a time of 22 minutes, 38 seconds. Veteran Tony Goodwill, despite finishing just outside the prizes in the MV65 category, had a brilliant race finishing in 24:46, while Liz Hulcup won gold in the WV70 category in a time of 25:50.

Second-claim member Linda Edwards, representing Running Somewhere Else, of Cirencester, had a fine run in 28:50.

Headington 5 miles - 25th August, 2024

After only four days of recovery, both Darren Long and Tony Goodwill travelled to Marston, near Oxford, for the Headington 5 mile road race – an Oxfordshire Grand Prix race, which is organised in aid of OXSRAD, Oxford’s integrated Sports Centre. With tiredness still in their legs, Darren finished 7th in a fiercely competitive age category (MV50) in a time of 31 minutes and 49 seconds, while Tony finished in 41 minutes and 4 seconds.

Pershore Plum 10K - 25th August, 2024

Meanwhile, on the same day, Lorna Shawcross and Sharon Rees travelled to Worcestershire, for the Pershore Plum 10Km, part of the annual Plum Festival held in the beautiful Georgian Market Town. Starting at the Pershore Leisure Centre, then crossing the River Avon and heading out into the countryside and fields surrounding Wick, before returning to Pershore and finishing in the Abbey Park Grounds with the backdrop of the impressive Pershore Abbey.

Lorna, who is experienced in handling multi-terrain courses, finished strongly in 53 minutes and 24 seconds, with Sharon not far behind in 69:49.
