Newport Marathon - 16th April 2023

Sunday saw the return of the Newport Marathon, which was established in 2018, with the 26.2 mile course having designed by Welsh Olympian Steve Brace.

Bourton Roadrunner’s Susan Hunt was amongst the more than 1700 other runners, which started along the vibrant Newport riverfront. The single-loop route also passed the University of South Wales, providing stunning scenery of the Gwent Levels with its costal wildlife and medieval villages. Despite the early morning start, Susan completed the challenge in a brilliant 4 hours, two minutes and 54 seconds, finishing back along the Newport riverfront to claim her well-earned medal.

Meanwhile, on Saturday morning, Bourton Roadrunners organised one of its popular social events, taking in the Lydiard Park parkrun, Swindon, followed by an orienteering activity. At the parkrun Dougal Hamilton-Smith was the first club member to complete the 5Km course in a brilliant 23:02, claiming 2nd place in the junior men 15-17 category. Next was veteran runner John Raper in 25:35 (2nd MV70). Graham Lane was celebrating his 100th parkrun, which he did in style, finishing 1st MV65 in a time of 26:49. Other Bourton members included Janice Townsend (30:12), Gillian James (31:23), Ali Tighe (32:24), Val McKay (35:51), and Louise Hamilton-Smith, who ran with her daughter Celia (43.14).

On the same day the club was present at a number of other parkrun events, including: Cheltenham Pittville Park: Chris Dry – 27:36.
Chipping Norton: Rob Williams – 30:08.
Sandwell Valley: Susan Hunt – 27:13 (FV55/1).
Newport, South Wales: Jaq Underwood – 25:59 (FV55/1).

Highlights
