Abingdon Marathon - 20th October 2024
Bourton Roadrunners’ Alex Pye has been improving with every race over the last year, and this weekend he achieved a major mile-stone at the Abingdon Marathon, where he recorded an impressive time of two hours, 59 minutes and 5 seconds. espite windy weather conditions, Alex said that it “wasn’t too bad to be fair and didn’t really make a difference”.
Fellow Bourton member Iain Cox ran extremely well in his first marathon at the same event, where he achieved four hours, 10 minutes and 31 seconds. Iain enjoyed the experience, only slowing slightly in the last few miles, and is already looking forward to his next one at Brighton next April.
Henley Half Marathon - 20th October 2024
Darren Long and Maxine Emes also travelled to Oxfordshire, where they took part in the Henley Half Marathon, enjoying the famous Henley Bridge and the surrounding countryside, before returning along the Thames towpath and facing “heartbreak hill”, a mile long climb towards the end. Darren completed the 13.1 miles in a time of one hour, 29 minutes and 35 seconds, and was second in the Male Vet-50 category and 24th overall. Maxine had a strong run throughout, finishing well in 1:45:38.
Well Run 10K - 20th October, 2024
Meanwhile, eighteen year old Dougal Hamilton-Smith had been training hard, under the guidance of club coach Tom Knight, in readiness for his first ten mile race at the Great South Run this weekend. Therefore, understandably he was disappointed when it was announced on Saturday afternoon that the event had been cancelled on safety grounds, due to high coastal winds. However, he decided to join several other club members in the Well Run 10K, at Far Peak near Northleach.
Dougal achieved a fine 44 minutes and 27 minutes, finishing 15th overall. Ian Tolfts running in his first race since turning 60 was pleased with a strong 49:43 and MV60/3, despite being chased-down by Pat Gill (50:11). Steph Holton maintained her recent racing successes with a strong 51:15 and first LV60.

Stratford-upon-Avon: Susan Hunt - 26:26 (VW55/3).
