European Standard Distance Duathlon Championships - 16th June 2024
Bourton Roadrunners’ Darren Long represented Great Britain at the European Standard Distance Duathlon Championships, in Coimbra, Portugal.
Having qualified for the event for the second year in a row, Darren gave his all, completing the 10Km run in 39 minutes and 56 seconds; the 40Km bike ride in 71 minutes and the 5Km run in 21 minutes and 29 seconds. Finishing 15th in the 50-54 age-category is no mean feat at such a high-level event, and the club is proud of his achievement.
Midsummer Madness Ultra Marathon - 23rd June 2024
Participating in any sporting event in warm weather conditions can present additional challenges to participants, but a trail ultra-run definitely ensures that it’s going to be hard. This weekend four Bourton Roadrunners took part in the Midsummer Madness Ultra Marathon, hosted by the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA), coving 28 miles across the Malvern Hills.
Alex Pye and Derek Darby treated the event with a competitive spirit, with Alex finishing narrowly ahead in six hours, 52 minutes and 24 seconds while Derek was just 15 seconds behind.
Meanwhile, former Duathlon World Champion Margaret Hollamby and her partner Alan Thomas, took part in the event for the all-round experience and benefits of exercise surrounded by nature. Alan commented “It was brutal but fantastic, with fabulous support by the LDWA and an incredible course”. Allowing for breaks, the pair finished in a very respectable elapsed time of nine hours and 26 minutes.
Greystones 10K - 23rd June 2024
he club is a keen supporter of the Greystones 10K, held at the Greystone Farm and Nature Reserve, Bourton on the Water. Eight club members took part in this challenging trail race, with Danny Hannig finishing second overall in a time of 38 minute and 13 seconds.
Other Bourton runners were Steven Howell (51:52), John Harding (52:50), Iain Cox (53:32), Gillain Howell (55:21), Giles Canning (58:29), Tom Hill (59:58) and Jenny Evanson (78:41).
Tenby Long Course Weekend - 23rd June 2024
Second claim member Viv A’alton and Rob Williams, both of whom are keen cyclists, joined 3000 others at the Tenby Long Course Weekend event, where many youngsters training for Ironman races were taking part. The 70 mile event provided over 5000 feet of climbs, with tough hills in the last 20 miles. Viv finished in 4 hours, 49 minutes 52 seconds, while Rob achieved 6 hours and 57 seconds.
Parkrun events - 22nd June 2024
This weekend Bourton Roadrunners took-on the role of organising the Chipping Norton School Parkrun, as a thank you for the brilliant facilities
provided every week. This was provided under the guidance of Run Director, Catherine Price, a regular BRR member at this event. She was supported by 19 other club members,
namely: Alison Tighe, Allie Quinn, Barry O’Leary, Claire Carroll, Giles Canning, Ian Shoemark, Ian Tolfts, Jenny Evanson, Jo Cooper, John Gibson, Julie Smith,
Louise Hamilton-Smith, Lynn Hudson, Matt Price, Megan Ratcliffe, Megan Walker, Niamh Shoemark, Patrick Smith and Susan Hunt. Actually running there this week were
Tim Hemming - 21:41 (VM50/1), Lee Hutton - 25:20 (VM65/2), Susan Hunt - 26:53 (VW55/1), Louise Hamilton-Smith - 29:08 (VW40/3), David Turnbull - 30:12 (VM75/2),
Patricia Penteado - 30:12, tail-markers Lynn Hudson - 58:11 (VW65/2) and Jo Cooper 58:11 (VW60/3).
Also representing the club at parkrun was Jaq Underwood – 25:33 (VW55/2) at Newport South Wales.
